Very few knives look or feel as cool as the SOG Trident folding knives. SOG didn't just make these knives to sit in a display case though, you can tell that they are made to be put through some punishment.
I recently got a good deal on a SOG Trident Tanto folding knife with black blade and my review will be based on that knife.
What I like about the knife:
1. The tanto blade is crafted from AUS 8A stainless steel and is 3.75 inches long. This is an ideal size for your everyday folding knife because it is legal in most areas, but still long enough to make a great utility or work knife.
2. As you start to open the knife, you will notice that the blade comes flying out of the book.com" title="hand">handle with hardly any effort. It is not an automatic, so you won't need to worry about getting in trouble with the police in many places.
The Trident folders are classified as "assisted opening", which gives you the best of both worlds; quick and easy opening with no legal hassle.
SOG's Arc-Actuator style lock has been tested to hold several hundred pounds of direct pressure. This gives you added peace of mind that your knife wont be closing on your fingers when you need it most.
3. SOG has implemented a really helpful and unique feature in their Tridents. The groove in the book.com" title="hand">handle just beneath the pocket clip can be used to cut paracord,wire,rope,etc. without ever having to open the blade.
4. The Digi-grip handle provides a secure grip that will hold up in the most treacherous conditions. The pocket clip is reversible to allow for right or left handed carry.
5. Combine AUS 8A stainless steel with cryogenic heat treating and what do you get? Amazing edge retention and strength for your everyday pocketknife. There is also jimping (thumb grooves) on the back of the blade, which gives you even more cutting power.
What I didn't like:
I only wish that the SOG Tridents were available with slightly longer blades for military and law enforcement officials.
Overall:
With a suggested retail value of $110, you will have a hard time finding a knife with so many cool features for the money. The SOG Trident makes a wonderful tool for everyday carry by military, police and firefighters. Knife collectors will also be able to appreciate the amount of detail and craftsmanship that goes into these knives.
